Robert Graham's 1986 sculpture hangs suspended from a pyramidal frame at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Woodward — a 24-foot arm and fist weighing 8,000 pounds, installed as a memorial to Joe Louis, the Detroit-born heavyweight champion who held the world title for nearly 12 years. Louis grew up in Detroit, trained here, and became one of the most significant athletes of the 20th century. The fist is not a monument to violence. It is a monument to discipline, precision, and the refusal to be counted out.
