This is Red Wings Today, Issue 1, Game 2 — Tampa Bay vs. Detroit, from the inaugural season at Little Caesars Arena, 2017.
On the cover: Henrik Zetterberg, #40, captain’s C on his chest, in full Red Wings red, staring down the ice with the quiet authority of a man who had been doing this for fifteen years and intended to keep doing it. The LCA inaugural season badge is printed in the lower right corner. This is one of the first game programs ever produced for Little Caesars Arena — the building that replaced Joe Louis Arena after 38 years as the home of Detroit hockey.
Little Caesars Arena opened in September 2017. The Red Wings played their first game there on October 5th. This program is from Game 2 of that inaugural season — among the earliest pieces of printed ephemera from a building that will define Detroit hockey for the next generation.
Zetterberg retired in 2018 due to a back injury, making this one of his final seasons as captain. A program from this era — Zetterberg on the cover, inaugural season badge in the corner — is a document of a specific and unrepeatable moment in Red Wings history.
