The September 1979 "Fall Potpourri Issue" of National Lampoon features a Norman Rockwell-style illustration of a fraternity hazing scene: a bespectacled pledge in a red Omega Tau sweater bent over, paddle incoming from a larger frat brother looming behind him — an "Autumn Haze" medallion glowing in the background like a seal of approval.
It's the Lampoon's annual back-to-school cover done in the magazine's most Rockwellian mode — wholesome composition, deeply unwholesome subject matter. The contrast is the joke, and it lands cleanly. A "potpourri" issue by design, covering the full range of the magazine's interests as summer ends and the academic year begins again.
