The October 1988 issue of National Lampoon features a richly illustrated opera house cover: Pete Rose in full Cincinnati Reds uniform, slumped in a box seat with the glazed expression of a man deeply, profoundly bored — surrounded by a Viking soprano mid-aria, a bound blonde in the adjacent seat, George Steinbrenner, and a full house of tuxedoed patrons. The headline: How I Spent My Summer Vacation, by Pete Rose.
The sneak preview banner at the top: Jimmy Swaggart's Uncensored Videos! The cover lines deliver the full late-era Lampoon range: Nightmare at Baseball Dream Camp, Rodrigues on Handicapped Sports, Steinbrenner — Next to Manson in America's Heart, Diary of a Ball Girl, Arena Golf — The Sporting News Parody, and Absolutely No Pictures of Jim Palmer in His Underpants. That last one is a promise and a threat simultaneously.
A bimonthly issue from the magazine's later run — $3.95 cover price, larger format, still sharp. A strong sports-themed issue with excellent illustration. Sold as-is.
