The November 1979 "Love Issue" of National Lampoon features a richly painted pulp romance cover: a teenage couple locked in a kiss in an armchair, completely absorbed — while mom walks in behind them, hair in curlers, holding a fruit basket, expression somewhere between resigned and disgusted. Nobody is having a good time except the two people who don't know she's there.
It's a perfect domestic comedy in a single image — the Lampoon's take on love as something that happens in spite of, and constantly interrupted by, the rest of life. The illustration quality is exceptional, in the tradition of the magazine's best painted covers.
