The November 1978 "The Body" issue of National Lampoon features one of the most discussed covers of the magazine's later run: a woman in a black dress standing before a carnival "Goofy-Time Fun Mirror" — which reflects back a tall, slim, glamorous version of herself. The gap between the two images is the entire joke, and it lands with a weight that hasn't faded.
By 1978, American culture was deep into the aerobics era, the diet industry was booming, and body image anxiety was front-page news. The Lampoon took that cultural moment and made it into a funhouse. It's one of those covers that's funny and uncomfortable in equal measure — which is exactly where the magazine did its best work.
