The November 1975 "Work" issue of National Lampoon arrives with one of the most viscerally striking covers in the magazine's history: a man biting down on a circular saw blade, blood at the corners of his mouth, grimacing through the pain. The cover text is itself a comedic inventory of the American working experience — layoffs, picket lines, dues, scabs, goons, finks, forklifts, lockouts, sweatshops, black lung, boilermakers, the Wobblies, Johnny Friendly, and the company store. Every grievance, every indignity, catalogued with deadpan precision.
