National Lampoon Magazine — June 1979 (Kids Issue)
The June 1979 "Kids Issue" of National Lampoon features one of the most visually striking covers in the magazine's later run: a small boy in a blue jacket walking an enormous, iridescent alien sea creature on a leash — tentacles, spines, and all — down a dark suburban street as if it's a perfectly ordinary evening. "KIDS" is scrawled across the top in yellow crayon. The creature illustration is genuinely spectacular.
Inside, the Lampoon takes on childhood from every angle: Gahan Wilson's "Don't", "Alice in Regularland", "Young Bums", and "How to Make a Kid of Your Own." The magazine at its most darkly playful — children's content filtered through the Lampoon's particular sensibility.
