National Lampoon Magazine — February 1989 ("And Then the Bubble of Their Love Burst...")
The February 1989 issue of National Lampoon features a pop-art comic book cover timed to perfection: Mike Tyson in boxing gloves, crying a single tear, while Robin Givens screams at him in a speech bubble — "Blah-Blah... Manic-Depressive... Blah-Blah... Pick Up Your Socks... Blah-Blah... My Mother Says... Blah-Blah..." A broken heart with a lightning bolt floats above them. The banner at the bottom: INSIDE: The Tyson-Givens Bout.
The Tyson-Givens marriage and its spectacular public collapse — including Givens' famous Barbara Walters interview in which she described living with Tyson as "torture" while he sat silently beside her — was the tabloid story of late 1988. The Lampoon's February 1989 cover landed at exactly the right moment, rendered in the visual language of a romance comic gone wrong.
Cover lines: Elron Hubbard's Diarrhetics, The Return of Drinking Tips and B.K. Taylor, Rolling Stone Parody, and The Last Temptation of Gilbert Gottfried. Late-era Lampoon still finding its targets. Sold as-is.
