National Lampoon Magazine — February 1978 (Spring Fascism Preview)
The February 1978 "Spring Fascism Preview" issue of National Lampoon features one of the most notorious and frequently discussed covers in the magazine's history: a glamorous woman in a black leather jacket and SS officer's cap — eagle insignia on the crown, Hitler mustache drawn on, arms crossed, set against a deep red background. The headline: Spring Fascism Preview.
It's a fashion magazine parody taken to its most extreme logical conclusion — the Lampoon treating fascism as a seasonal trend, complete with the visual language of a Vogue spread. Uncomfortable, intentional, and impossible to look away from. By 1978, the punk movement had been playing with similar imagery for two years; the Lampoon was doing what it always did — pushing further and making it funny.
A genuinely important artifact of late-70s American satire and one of the most recognizable covers in the magazine's 130-issue run. Original subscriber copy with mailing label. Solid condition. Sold as-is.
