The February 1976 "Artists and Models" issue of National Lampoon features a photo cover that executes its joke with complete precision: a fully clothed, bearded art instructor stands at the front of a life drawing class — while the class itself is populated entirely by nude female models who are also doing the drawing. The roles are reversed. Nobody acknowledges it.
It's a single visual idea, perfectly composed and committed to without a wink. The Lampoon at its most deadpan.
Cover lines deliver the full range: The Art Deco Craze, Clown Pig Around with Tits, Picasso's Breakfast, and Ballet Folklorico de Omaha, Neb. — that last one a masterpiece of specificity.
