National Lampoon. January 1977. They took the Hearst quote literally.
The January 1977 issue of National Lampoon. The cover quotes William Randolph Hearst: “Give me a magazine cover with a beautiful girl, a dog, or a baby on it, and I’ll give you a magazine that sells.” The cover image delivers all three simultaneously — a blonde woman in a polka-dot apron presenting a cooked dog on a serving platter to a child seated at a kitchen table. The joke is in the literalism. The execution is immaculate. Cover price: $1.00.
