The January 1972 issue of National Lampoon — Is Nothing Sacred? The cover by McInroe depicts the iconic Che Guevara silhouette — beret, star, the image that had been on a million dorm room posters since 1968 — hit squarely in the face with a cream pie, the custard exploding across the red background. The answer to the question on the cover is no. Inside: Son-o-God Comics, an R. Crumb Rip-Off, Uncalled-For Attacks, and Pointless Insults. Cover price: 75 cents.
The Che image was the most recognizable revolutionary icon of the era. The Lampoon’s response was a pie. That’s the whole argument. The cover is one of the most conceptually precise of the early run.
