Belle Isle in Winter — Detroit Skyline from the River (Artifact Print)
Two park benches sit empty in deep snow on the shore of Belle Isle. Bare branches reach across the top of the frame. Across the frozen river, the Detroit skyline holds its position in the flat winter light — the Renaissance Center towers visible on the left, the riverfront buildings stretching east. Nothing is moving. The city is there, and the island is quiet.
Belle Isle is a 982-acre island park in the Detroit River, connected to the city by a single bridge and surrounded by the international border between the United States and Canada. It has been a public park since 1879, designed in part by Frederick Law Olmsted. In winter, the island empties out. The benches stay. The skyline doesn't change. This image was made from the island's western shore, looking back at the city that owns it.
A document of Detroit in winter — the skyline at a distance, the river between, and the stillness that comes when the season clears everything else away.
