An Avon novelty aftershave decanter in the form of an Ethan Allen pepperbox pistol — six fluted chrome barrels, engraved gold-finish frame with scrollwork, checkered walnut grip, gold trigger guard. In the original illustrated box with period artwork depicting the historical pepperbox in American frontier life.
Avon produced hundreds of novelty decanters in the 1960s and 70s — cars, animals, antique weapons, Western figures — and the antique firearms series was among the most popular. The pepperbox pistol was a natural subject: Ethan Allen’s six-barrel percussion revolvers were the most widely carried handguns in pre-Civil War America, carried by forty-niners, gamblers, and anyone who wanted more than one shot. Avon put aftershave in one and sold it to your grandfather. He kept the box.
