The New York Times Magazine — June 22, 1947, Princess Elizabeth "Freeman of London" Cover (Vintage Magazine)
June 22, 1947. Princess Elizabeth is 21 years old. She has just been granted the Freedom of the City of London — one of the oldest and most prestigious civic honors in Britain, dating to 1237. She stands at a lectern in a floral dress and hat, surrounded by dignitaries in ceremonial robes, reading her acceptance. Five years later she will be Queen.
This is the cover of The New York Times Magazine, Section 6, for that Sunday — a full-page photograph of the moment, captioned simply: Princess Elizabeth — ‘Freeman’ of London. See Page 4.
The interior is a complete mid-century time capsule. Advertisements for the Commercial Travelers Mutual Accident Association of America (founded 1883, Utica, New York), the New York Stock Exchange, accident and health insurance plans at 25–33% savings, and the full editorial content of a Sunday magazine from the summer of 1947 — two years after the end of World War II, two years before NATO, the year the Marshall Plan was announced and the Cold War began in earnest.
Sold as found. The cover shows honest wear consistent with nearly 80 years of age — toning, some spine separation, surface wear. The content is intact and legible throughout.
