The kneeling figure stretches outward — one hand holding a sphere of radiating light, the other cradling a small family. Behind him, the seals of the City of Detroit and Wayne County are cast in relief against a gridded marble backdrop. The inscription reads: "Now the Lord is that Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."
Marshall Fredericks completed this bronze in 1958, and it has stood outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center ever since. At 26 feet tall and nearly 16,000 pounds, it is one of the largest cast bronze sculptures in the United States. Detroiters call it simply "The Spirit" — a figure that has watched the city through its highest moments and its hardest ones.
