Pontiac's Phoenix Center, captured as it came down.
The Phoenix Center was Pontiac's brutalist civic anchor — a raised plaza, parking structure, and public gathering space completed in 1973 as part of the city's urban renewal effort. Designed to revitalize a downtown already in decline, it instead became one of the most debated structures in Oakland County history: a monument to a particular theory of urban planning that didn't survive contact with the city it was meant to save. Demolition began in 2021. This photograph was made during that process, when the structure existed in a state between what it was and what it would become.
This is not a memorial. It is a document. A record of a specific place at a specific moment that no longer exists in this form.
