The September 1977 "Grow Up!" issue of National Lampoon features a Charles Rodrigues cover on a blazing hot pink background: two grotesque elderly mourners at an open casket — one weeping with theatrical abandon, a blue feather erupting from her hat, the other looking on with complete, practiced indifference. The headline: GROW UP!
The banner at the top reads: An Apology to Liza Minnelli. The cover lines promise: Mature Drollery, Responsible Fun, and Dignified Amusements. The Lampoon performing respectability for exactly one issue — and doing it with a funeral scene on a hot pink background.
Rodrigues was one of the magazine's most distinctive contributors, and this cover is a showcase for his particular brand of grotesque warmth. Bagged and boarded, solid condition. Sold as-is.
