The September 1975 "Back to College" issue of National Lampoon features one of the magazine's most recognizable covers: a Norman Rockwell-style illustration of a tweed-jacketed professor, pipe clenched in teeth, administering a spanking to a female student — an "F" grade paper crumpled on the floor beside her. It's a pitch-perfect parody of mid-century American illustration, turned just far enough to become something else entirely.
