The June 1977 issue of National Lampoon features one of the most perfectly executed covers in the magazine's history: a young man stands beside the rear end of a full-grown elephant, shovel in hand, looking directly into the camera with an expression of complete and total resignation. The headline at the top reads: I got my job through the... National Lampoon.
It's a parody of the famous New York Times classified ad slogan — "I got my job through the New York Times" — taken to its most logical and least desirable conclusion. The joke is in the gap between the aspirational headline and the reality of the photograph. It lands instantly and completely.
