The July 1977 "Sex Issue" of National Lampoon features one of the most beloved and frequently discussed covers in the magazine's entire run: a bathroom tile wall, rendered in full, covered in crude graffiti. A stick figure woman. "SEX" in orange bubble letters. "I NEED SEX" in blue marker. "Amy Does It Good!" "For a Good Time Call 879-900." "Carlos You Mama!" Signed at the bottom: Walter.
The entire cover is a bathroom wall. That's it. That's the joke. And it's perfect — a magazine about sex, rendered as the most honest possible document of how people actually think and write about sex when nobody's watching. The Lampoon at its most conceptually pure.
Walter Minus, the illustrator, signed it. Which makes a bathroom wall graffiti cover a signed work of art. The Lampoon understood the assignment completely.
