The August 1979 "Vacation!" issue of National Lampoon is one of the most significant in the magazine's history — the direct inspiration for National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), one of the most beloved comedy films of the decade.
The cover is a Norman Rockwell-style illustration: a customs officer holding up a pink bra with two fingers while a mortified woman in a powder-blue suit looks on, her luggage ransacked and spilled across the counter. The cover text promises: Canceled plane flights, stolen luggage, motion sickness, hostile natives, poison water, weird diseases, rubber food, and much, much more!
This issue launched the "Vacation" franchise. John Hughes adapted it. Chevy Chase starred in it. The rest is history. For any serious National Lampoon collector, this is an essential piece — the origin point of a cultural phenomenon.
