The April 1978 "Spring Cleaning" issue of National Lampoon features one of the magazine's most self-aware covers: a young girl in a scout-style uniform — yellow vest, blue skirt, rubber gloves — scrubbing the cover of the magazine itself with a soapy brush, bucket at her feet. The cover is the joke. She's cleaning the thing you're holding.
It's a quietly brilliant piece of design — meta before meta was a word anyone used casually. The Lampoon at its most playful and visually inventive, wrapped in the wholesome imagery of a Girl Scout doing her civic duty.
