The April 1976 "Sports Issue" of National Lampoon features one of the most perfectly deadpan photo covers in the magazine's history: a stocky woman in a red USSR athletic jersey and white shorts, bronze medal around her neck, standing at full attention with a completely neutral expression. "SPORTS" runs across the bottom in massive red block letters.
The joke is entirely in the composition — the casting, the straight face, the bronze (not gold) medal, the Cold War athletic uniform. No caption needed. Released in an Olympic year, with American-Soviet athletic rivalry at its cultural peak, the Lampoon found the funniest possible angle and held it without blinking.
