National Lampoon. June 1971. Religion for Fun and Prophet.

The June 1971 issue of National Lampoon — the Religion for Fun and Prophet issue. The cover depicts a grotesque caricature of a prophet — Moses-like, robes, one finger raised to heaven — clutching a copy of Reader’s Digest while a crowd of true believers gazes up from below. The joke is in the prop. Inside: Cult Hero Comics featuring Kate Millett, Charles Reich, Bucky Fuller, and Marshall McLuhan — the intellectual celebrities of the early 1970s, each rendered as a religious figure for a secular age. Cover price: 75 cents.

This is National Lampoon in its second year, already targeting the full spectrum of American cultural life — organized religion, the counterculture, and the media intellectuals who served as its prophets. The cover art is by the legendary Neal Adams.

Good vintage condition. Individually bagged. One of a kind.
