The cover is a full Art Deco retro-futurist illustration: a gleaming streamlined train station in yellow and teal, zeppelins and biplanes crossing a blue sky, flying cars, robots on the street below, MODERN TIMES in large pink letters across the facade. Inside: Prophetic Visions, Peaceful Uses, Optimistic Forecasts, Secret Prototypes, Artists’ Conceptions, Aerial Views, Architects’ Renderings, Cutaway Drawings, and Zoom Lens Photos & Speedlines. Cover price: 75 cents.
The cover is a loving, precise parody of the Popular Mechanics and Popular Science covers of the 1930s and 40s — the era when the future was always just around the corner and always looked like this. By 1973, the future had arrived and looked nothing like it. The Lampoon noticed.
