The January 1974 issue of National Lampoon — the Animals issue. The cover is a photograph: a kangaroo bellied up to the bar at Joe’s, a bored bartender leaning on the rail, the drink menu visible behind him — Mixed Drinks $12.00, Beer $3.00, Imported $5.00, Wine by the glass $7.00. The cover line reads: Say, we don’t get many kangaroos in here. And at these prices, you won’t get many more. Inside: Attack of the Sizeable Beasts, a Penthouse parody, The Law of the Jungle, and Popular Evolution Magazine. Cover price: 75 cents.
The kangaroo joke is one of the oldest in the English language. The Lampoon shot it straight, put it on the cover, and made it new. The execution — the actual kangaroo, the actual bar, the actual bored bartender — is what makes it work. One of the most collectible covers of the mid-run.
