National Lampoon Presents: Cartoons Even We Wouldn’t Dare Print is a standalone special publication from the National Lampoon — an anthology of cartoons deemed too far even for a magazine that made its name going too far. Cover price: $2.95. This copy is still sealed in its original poly bag, unread, unhandled, exactly as it left the newsstand.
About This Publication
The cover is the joke: a desk scattered with rejected cartoon submissions, a yellow rejection letter from the National Lampoon editors at 635 Madison Avenue, New York, a red pencil, a coffee ring, a half-eaten pastry. The letter reads, in part: “Dear Contributor: Thank you for the opportunity to review these cartoons. Unfortunately they are not suitable for publication at this time. — The Editors.”
The premise is that these are the cartoons that didn’t make it — which, for National Lampoon, is saying something. The magazine published work by Sam Gross, B. Kliban, Gahan Wilson, and other cartoonists who defined the outer edge of American humor in the 1970s and 80s. Whatever didn’t make their cut is worth seeing.

About National Lampoon
National Lampoon (1970–1998) was the most influential American humor magazine of the 20th century — the training ground for John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Gilda Radner, and the writers who would go on to create Saturday Night Live, Animal House, Caddyshack, and Vacation. Sealed copies of special publications are increasingly rare and consistently underpriced at estate sales and shops. This one won’t last.
