National Lampoon, August 1980. Theme: Anxiety. The cover is a close-up painted portrait of a man’s face — rendered upside down, so the mouth becomes the forehead and the eyes stare up from the bottom of the frame. The effect is immediately unsettling and immediately funny, which is exactly what the Lampoon at its best could do. Cover price $1.50.
This is peak-era Lampoon — 1980 sits right at the transition between the golden years and the mid-era, and the magazine was still producing genuinely inventive cover concepts. The Anxiety issue is one of the most visually memorable of the run. Bagged in a protective sleeve.
