The August 1972 issue of National Lampoon — The Miracle of Democracy. The cover depicts Richard Nixon as Pinocchio — a massive, elongated nose extending off the right edge of the page, the grin wide and knowing, the yellow suit immaculate. The tagline at the bottom: Brought to you by the Republican Party. Inside: Coronation of King Dick, Equal Time, and The Watergate Comic. Cover price: 75 cents.
This was published in August 1972 — three months before Nixon’s landslide re-election, the same summer the Watergate break-in had already occurred. The Lampoon knew. The cover is one of the most historically precise pieces of political satire the magazine ever produced — the nose was already growing.
