Detroit — Woodward Avenue, Early Morning (Artifact Print)
Artifact Print · One Document, One Moment
Woodward Avenue, empty and open.
Woodward Avenue is Michigan’s main street — the road that connects Detroit to Pontiac, that carried the auto industry north, that defined the corridor of a state. Designated in 1818 as one of the first roads in Michigan Territory, Woodward became the spine of the American automotive age: the route along which Ford, GM, and Chrysler built their empires, the avenue that gave its name to the Woodward Dream Cruise, the road that still runs from the Detroit River to Pontiac’s downtown. In the early morning, before the commuters and the commerce, it belongs to itself. This photograph was made in that window, when the avenue is just a road and the city is still deciding what kind of day it wants to have.
