The Renaissance Center before the city wakes up.
Detroit’s Renaissance Center rises from the riverfront in the early morning — glass towers catching the first light before the traffic, before the noise, before the day begins. The RenCen was commissioned by Henry Ford II in the aftermath of the 1967 Detroit uprising, conceived as a private-sector statement of confidence in a city the public sector had largely abandoned. It opened in 1977 as the tallest building in Michigan and one of the most ambitious mixed-use developments in American history. General Motors purchased the complex in 1996 and made it their world headquarters — a position it still holds. The building has been a landmark, a headquarters, a destination, and a subject of debate about what Detroit was trying to become and whether it succeeded. This photograph captures it in a moment of stillness that the building rarely gets.
