As a rule a man’s a fool. It was true when someone stitched this. It is still true.
A framed needlepoint sampler — cream linen ground, red cross-stitch lettering, decorative border in red, yellow, and green, set in a walnut frame. The verse reads:
As a rule a man’s a fool
When it’s hot he wants it cool
When it’s cool he wants it hot
Always wanting what is not
The verse is old — attributed variously to anonymous American folk wisdom, to Ogden Nash, to the kind of thing that gets stitched onto linen because it is too true to leave unsaid. Someone made this by hand, one stitch at a time, and put it in a walnut frame, and hung it somewhere it could be read every day. The stitching is even and careful. The border is precise. This was made by someone who knew what they were doing and meant what they were saying.
